In which situation is DVT prophylaxis indicated?

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis is indicated in specific clinical situations where patients are at increased risk for thromboembolic events. In the case of sickle cell crisis management, patients experience severe, painful vaso-occlusive crises, which can result in immobilization. This immobility significantly heightens the risk of developing DVT. Therefore, implementing prophylactic measures can help mitigate this risk during a crisis.

The other scenarios do not universally warrant DVT prophylaxis. DVT prophylaxis is not limited solely to patients who have undergone surgery, as many other situations may necessitate it. While sickle cell patients may generally require careful management, not all sickle cell patients need DVT prophylaxis. Elevated platelet counts do not automatically indicate a need for DVT prophylaxis; rather, the overall clinical context and additional risk factors for thromboembolism must be considered.
